Najmu will uphold the First Amendment rights of incarcerated Muslims to practice their faith by creating know-your-rights materials for detention centers, prisons, and Muslims; and through litigation if needed.

Though the First Amendment and the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act protects the religious rights of individuals who are in prison or immigration detention centers, in practice, their rights are not always respected. For example, there has been a plethora of litigation aimed at ensuring prisoners receive Halal food, are allowed to pray, are allowed to observe religious-grooming practices, etc. However, all of these lawsuits have been reactive rather than proactive—that is, they aim to rectify a problem that has already occurred. This project will make it so that the problem can be rectified before one even arises.
